I recently went to the LA County Fair and stumbled upon this booth of the most gorgeous shadowboxes filled with preserved butterflies, beetles, grasshoppers and more from around the world. The colors - oh my! Glorious! According to the person I spoke to all the insects used died naturally. I bought a shadowbox for my room (the top view of the butterfly on the bottom in the above photo - the butterfly on top is what its underbelly looks like). Even the photos don't do the vibrant colors justice. Love that each framed specimen comes with the name of the insect and where it came from in the world. $24.99 and up at Real Butterfly Gifts
According to their site, "All of the real Butterflies, moths, beetles, spiders and other framed insects used in our framed shadowbox collections have been raised on natural cruelty free tropical farms around the world. These educational farms, aviaries and co-ops provide a real source of income for native people who would otherwise have to sell trees off of their land or raise cattle which are both ecologically disastrous."
