Interview: Betz White, Crafty Designer
Betz White,
Crafty Designer
What do you make or design?
The Betz White Collection is
made up primarily of whimsical objects constructed out of recycled
sweaters. My designs reflect the
everyday item in a fresh and humorous light. I make pillows, throws, covered
journals, but most popular are my Cupcake and Cup O' Joe pincushions.
I am inspired by my
materials, felted wool. I am drawn to bright colors and unique color
combinations. I love the thrill of thrifting and finding something really great
and reusable. It wasn't really a conscious decision to start making felted
wool things, it's just something I have been experimenting with for years. It
is just in the last year that I've started selling at fairs and on the web.
Who inspires you?
I love the work of Missoni,
Issey Miyake, Kaffe Fassett, Orla Kiely. I am also inspired by Japanese crafts
and anything made out of felt!
How would you describe
yourself?
I have been a childrenswear
designer for many years. I have an eye for whimsy and playfulness. I enjoy a
plot with a twist, a play on materials, the element of surprise. These are the
things that make me smile and I believe that comes across in my work.
What’s the last book you
read?
I'm a "grazer"
when it comes to books. I mostly read bits and pieces of how-to books as
needed. Books on child development, legal guides for artists, really exciting
stuff!
Are you a neat freak or
creatively messy?
Both. I like to clean my
studio at the end of one project before starting the next. When I am in the
midst of a project, felt and fiber are everywhere! I need to invent some kind
of "lint trap" for my studio door to stop all of my scraps from
trailing me into the rest of the house.
What is one of your fondest
memories?
I have two little boys, so
I'd have to say my memories of their earliest days. The thing with kids,
though, is that they are a constant stream of fond memories. My husband and I
reminisce about moments that happened 5 years ago up to 5 minutes ago!
What’s your biggest pet
peeve?
Man's lack of vision for the
future in regards to the environment.
If you could be a bird, what
kind of bird would you be and why?
An early bird...the one that catches the worm! :)
